You may have seen major hotel booking sites in the news last month after six of them agreed to change their practices following a probe by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) into their practices. The CMA had found that many of the sites employed pressure tactics, displayed misleading ‘discounts’ and charged hidden fees. Anyone using these sites will be familiar with the ‘pop ups’ displaying how many people are viewing a hotel at any given time. These, and other functions such as warnings of ‘only a few rooms left’ were found to pressurise consumers. The sites have now committed to making it clear that those looking at the hotel may be searching for different dates as well as providing clearer messaging and pricing.
